The IGERT Program in Multidisciplinary Approaches to Sustainable Bioenergy (MAS BioEnergy) is an NSF-funded graduate program that aims to educate a new generation of scientists that have interdisciplinary training across several areas relevant to sustainable bioenergy.

MAS BioEnergy Scholars will be graduate students in a PhD-granting department or program at Colorado State University and will fulfill the requirements of the degree program in which they are registered. In addition, they will take two classes designed for the program that gives them breadth of knowledge across multiple disciplines. They will also incorporate components of at least two disciplines associated with bioenergy in their dissertation project. The aim is for students to become experts in their chosen field of study, and to become knowledgeable about the many technical challenges facing the emerging bioenergy industry.

Participation in the MAS BioEnergy program provides many benefits to PhD students. First, graduate students in the program will receive two years of funding as a MAS BioEnergy Scholar. Stipends for Scholars will be $30,000 per year and tuition and fees will be paid for by the program. After the first two years, students will be supported by their major professor. Scholars will visit three MAS BioEnergy labs during their first year in the program.

These rotations will include at least one discipline outside their area of focus (for example, a Biology PhD candidate may rotate in an engineering or economics lab). MAS BioEnergy Scholars will participate in a variety of MAS BioEnergy activities throughout their tenure at CSU, including a week-long trip to Washington, DC to learn about the technology- policy interface and a three-month internship in industry, government, or NGO.

NSF funding for this program is available only to US citizens and permanent residents. Qualified international students with funding from their home government are encouraged to apply and should contact the Program Coordinator for more information.

To apply to the program please:
1. Apply to Colorado State University and ask your chosen department to send copies of all your application materials (application, transcripts, GRE scores and letters of recommendation) to the MAS BioEnergy Program Coordinator at bioenergy-IGERT@colostate.edu.

2.Write a personal statement (2 pages, single spaced, 11-12point) describing why you are interested in focusing your PhD graduate training in the area of BioEnergy and email it to the MAS BioEnergy Program Coordinator at bioenergy-IGERT@colostate.edu.

Note: The MAS BioEnergy program can only support US citizens and permanent residents. However, we are happy to consider international applicants who have fellowships from their home countries or other organizations. Please indicate if you have outside support in your initial application email to the Program Coordinator.
